Built in the 15th century the castle once belonged to the Cathcart family.
As the legend goes, the property at one time was in the hands of Sir John Cathcart, who created an income through a number of marriages which all ended with him murdering his spouse. However, May Kennedy of Culzean was his final wife, in an attempt to not follow in the footsteps of her husbands previous wives she pushed him off a cliff. It is said that his ghostly spirit still haunts the castle today. The castle can be reached via the Ballantrae to Lendalfoot section of the Ayrshire Coastal Path.
