The McKechnie Institute, which opened in 1889, was designed in the Scottish Baronial style with some Renaissance detailing by the Glasgow architects McKissack & Rowan.
The Institute has a collection of memorabilia from Girvan and the surrounding Carrick area, covering areas such as Ailsa Craig, local trade, fishing, social activities and travel. There are often displays of items from the McKechnie Institute collection in conjunction with a programme of temporary exhibitions. The institute is also a popular meeting place for many local groups as well as playing host to council surgeries and art classes. If you would like to book the McKechnie Institute for a meeting, event or exhibition please contact the councils Collections Management Officer at Rozelle.House@south-ayrshire.gov.uk. Operated by South Ayrshire Council.
